Negotiating Skills

Job descriptions frequently list negotiation ability as a desirable asset of job candidates, but the capability to negotiate requires a collection of interpersonal and rhetoric abilities used together to bring a desired outcome. The circumstances of negotiation happen when two sides or groups of people disagree on the solution for a problem or the goal for a project or contract. A successful negotiation requires the two parties to come together and hammer out an agreement that's acceptable to both. Problem Analysis - Effective negotiators must have the abilities to analyze an issue to determine the interests of every party in the negotiation.

A detailed problem analysis identifies the problem, the interested parties and the outcome goals. For instance, in an employer and the contract negotiation, the problem or area at which the parties disagree can be in salary or benefits. Preparation includes determining goals, areas for trade and options to the stated goals. Past precedents and results can set the tone for current negotiations. Active Listening - Negotiators have the abilities to listen actively to the other party throughout the debate. Active listening involves the capability to read body language as well as verbal communication. Whilst a negotiation on contentious issues might be frustrating, allowing emotions to take control throughout the meeting might lead to unfavorable results.

Example of Negotiation:

For instance, a manager frustrated in the lack of progress during a salary negotiation might concede more than is acceptable for the organization in an effort to end the frustration. And on the other hand, employees who negotiate pay raise might become too emotionally involved to accept a compromise with direction and take an all or nothing approach, which breaks down the communication between the two parties. Verbal Communication - Negotiators must possess the skill to communicate clearly and efficiently to the other side throughout the negotiation. Misunderstandings can occur if the negotiator doesn't state his case clearly. During a bargaining meeting, an efficient negotiator must have the abilities to state his desired outcome as well as his reasoning.

Collaboration and Teamwork in Negotiation:

Negotiation isn't necessarily an one side against another arrangement it is one of the most important leadership skills. Effective negotiators must have the abilities to work together as a team and foster a collaborative atmosphere during discussions. Those involved with a negotiation on both sides of the issue must work together to reach an agreeable solution. Problem Solving - Individuals with discussion skills have the skill to seek a wide range of solutions to problems. Negotiators with patience and the capability to persuade others without using manipulation can maintain a positive atmosphere during a difficult negotiation. Ethics and Reliability - Ethical standards and credibility in an efficient negotiator promote a trusting environment for negotiations. Both sides in a negotiation must trust that the other party will follow through on promises and agreements.
